Leaving a Trace

People supposedly yearn for immortality. In practice, a decent footprint would be enough. Not a monument – because monuments have a habit of slowly becoming overgrown with grass – but something useful: an idea, a comprehensive vision, which someone will open after us and say, “Oh, that makes sense.”

A legacy doesn’t have to be heavy. It has to be usable.

Leaving a legacy can be done in various ways. He who builds a bridge leaves a bridge. He who teaches leaves habits of thought. It’s better than a phone app, because it doesn’t run out of juice after three hours. In bridge, leaving a solid vision that spares bridge players from failed efforts. Someone might say, “Why bother, the world will forget.”

Yes, he’ll forget most of it. But he remembers the handy things.

He remembers the spoon, not the porcelain sculpture of the spoon. Therefore, instead of accumulating greatness, let’s accumulate usefulness. Instead of “I was there,” let’s leave “you there.” Ultimately, the world is made up of people who need a simple way to get through Monday so they don’t ruin their Tuesday.
